Misfire on acceleration and poor performance once warmed up seem the most common complaint. LPFP (low pressure fuel pump) The E89 uses a 'primer pump' inside the tank to send fuel up to the HPFP. You can often hear it start when you turn on the ignition. Again, seems like noise issues are the most prevalent complaints.
1st thing to try is resetting it. I did hit some debris in the road but i didnt think it was enough to effect anything. Just press the reset button and hold it for a few seconds. It will reset. If it comes back on again then either one tyre (on the same axle) is a different pressure or you have a system fault.

If the electric/hydraulic soft top motor is bad, the windows should still go down, and the top latch should disengage. But the top won't power down any farther than that. It seems like some people have been lucky recently getting BMW to cover the cost of the repair, others have been paying a little under $2000.
Alright, I know it’s a common thing where many E85 Z4 owners wish to buy or have a hardtop rather than the stock soft top. it’s great having a convertible, but with all the issues that arise with replacing damaged or failing hydraulic motors, electric motors, or vandalism due to people wanting to get inside your car, many would rather take to a hardtop.

Top of range model with sat nav etc. After just a few days a few problems have come about. First is (this was not working from the start) the intermittent windscreen wiper function does not work using the dial on the M52 High-Flow Water Pump w/Stainless Impeller – ~$215 and lifetime warranty. M52 Water Pump w/Metal Impeller – ~$45 but 24 month / 24k mile warranty. 3. Idle Control Valve Failure. The idle control valve on the M52 picks up dust and dirt over time which can result in it no longer functioning properly.

My '06 Z4 3.0i now has a top that does not open, at 30,500 mi. Dealer inspected and said in the invoice: "Customer states the top will not close. Top feels loose, like it's not connected to lifting mechanism. Micro switches working." In order to further diagnose the problem the top has to be removed.
The symptons you describe are overheating and it sounds like you got it hot enough to boil the coolant and cause pockets of air (air locks). These cars (SI) suffer from faulty water pump at 70k miles, which are electric and expensive. As above, sounds like erratic water pump.

Mine didn't actually fail but was pulsing the cooling fan from cold start up-I noticed the fan reving up/down & my indi hooked it up and read "implausible pump speed" (87k) New oe pump sourced for £280 and Bobs your uncle. Rob. same problem. I have an '03 z4 3.0 with the SMG. EXACT same problem in that it will not shift up into 4th. I did a lot of research and have come to the conclusion that if I am lucky, it is the pump. But the hard part is finding someone that has the appropriate software that can set it up again. I am in central, California. Merced, to be exact.
It's of special interest to note that on July 5th 2006 BMW implemented two production changes 1. a new machining process that produces a smoother surface of the worm gear & 2. a new lubrication for the worm gear.
